Plastic mould construction

Plastic injection moulds are designed and manufactured in the Metalstampi tooling department.

Starting from a customer-supplied model, the work is designed and developed using CAD/CANt workstations and then the material is processed using high-tech machinery.

The process of constructing a plastic mould can vary depending on the complexity of the part to be produced and the type of machinery and materials used. Design

This is the initial and most critical stage of the process. Engineers design the plastic mould according to the specifications of the plastic part to be produced. The design of the mould casing includes cooling channels, injection system, the core and cavity. Computer-aided design (CAD) software is commonly used at this stage.

Mould implementation

After designing the mould on paper or using CAD software, a physical model is made based on the drawing. This physical model will be the basis for building the final mould.

Mould construction

Once the model is completed, the craftsmen start constructing the actual plastic mould. This involves the construction of the core and cavity, as well as the assembly of other parts of the mould. This stage requires precision and attention to detail to ensure that the mould functions properly.

Surface machining

The inner surface of the mould parts, i.e. core and cavity, is machined to achieve the desired finish on the injected plastic. A good surface finish is essential to ensure that the final product has a smooth, defect-free surface.

Tempering and heat treatment

Depending on the type of plastic used and the requirements of the final part, the mould may undergo heat treatment and tempering to increase its durability and strength.

Assembly and testing

After mould construction and machining, it is assembled and tested to verify its correct functionality and compliance with the specifications of the final product.

Sample production

Before starting mass production, a number of samples are produced to test and perfect the plastic injection process and to ensure the quality of the parts produced.

Mass production

After passing the tests and obtaining the approved samples, the mould is ready for mass production. The melted plastic is injected into the mould under high pressure, cooled and then the plastic part is removed.
